Avignon
Today we went into Avignon to rent our car. It has GPS, which we're wondering how anyone ever did without. Now, all the sites we want to visit in Provence are easily found and the stress of navigating otherwise confusing round-a-bouts and one-way roads is all but vanquished. Another interesting feature this Citroen car has is a three-way height adjustment. For normal street driving it's in normal position, but when extra turning radius is required I can push a button and the suspension on the car raises a bit, allowing me to better navigate these old streets.
In Avignon we toured the outside and inside of the big wall, built to protect the pope. Once upon a time (13th century) this was the papal seat for the Catholic church. The wall encircles the inner city which is a maze of small streets filled with shops and sidewalk cafes. ![]()
At the heart of the inner city we found some neat stuff, like the Papal Palace, which appears to be built right out of the rocks itself.![]()
But even more fun was the merry-go-round in the square at the end of Rue de la Republique!
