tools i use

In no particular order, here are the tools I use daily:

Macintosh OS X – I’ve been on all sides of this fence over the years, participated in both sides of the OS wars, and in the end the Macintosh operating system wins, hands down.

Skitch – I use this app probably more than another other aside from a web browser. A picture is worth a thousand words: indeed! With Skitch I can easily take a screenshot, annotate it with text and arrows, and upload it for easy online sharing.

Firefox – The only reason I use Firefox is due to the great add-ons available for it. Truth be told I use Safari and Chrome pretty heavily too!

Firefox Add-On: Firebug – Essential for anyone needing to edit any CSS or HTML.

Diigo.com – I love having my bookmarks portable. I also love being able to share sets of bookmarks based on tag.

Twitter.com – My stream of tweets. I use this to stay linked with professionals from around Alaska and in the general edu-tech community.

Facebook.com – “So easy your mom could do it” – and she does! I use this social network to stay linked with friends and families, as well as businesses and colleagues.

Textmate – The best code editor available for Mac. I even use it to write haiku.

Transmit – Mac file transfer client of choice. I love that I can open files directly from an SFTP site, edit and save, and it automatically puts the file back on the server.

Gmail – Gmail is the best email client available.

Google Apps – I recently conducted a huge research project and wrote the 70 page report using Google Apps. Never once did I care if my laptop got smashed or stolen. It’s all in the cloud! Plus, multiple people editing a spreadsheet at the same time: beautiful.

Ubuntu Linux – My server platform of choice.

SmugMug – This is where I upload all our personal photos to. Unlimited storage in the cloud, and good features for sharing/viewing/embedding galleries.
