Farewell Honda

Well she gave it a great run but I had to cut her loose. That's right the Honda has been sold. For $1!

I feel the need to pay homage to a great car by reviewing her history. I hope I do her justice.

My grandfather always appreciated nice cars. So much in fact he trades in his lease every couple years for what he perceives as the latest/greatest. Nothing overly fancy, just something with the right balance of bells and whistles and function. I believe he drove the Accord for a few years starting when it was new in 1983. He always mentioned the custom paint job, the factory beige with custom brown top. No other Accord had that paint job.

He then bequeathed it to my mother, his daughter. This is when I really got to know the Accord. It was my mom's car for many many years, from the time I was in grade school. She drove it from Spokane to Arizona while she got her doctorate, back to Washington, and put a lot of miles on it commuting to Cheney through all kinds of weather.

When I was 16 it's the car I learned to drive in. It's the car I passed my driver's test in. Manual transmission, manual door locks, but cruise control and after-market air-conditioning (a necessity in AZ). Throughout high-school I drove this car on many dates and all over town. I blasted the stereo to its limits. I even floored the stick shift a couple times and made believe I was flying a spaceship. It got great gas mileage and always ran like a champ.

It wasn't until my last year in college that Mom gave it to me. I put a bunch of miles on it driving between Olympia and Spokane, and then more when I moved to Seattle. Then the faithful Accord came with me to Alaska, where she treated me well, getting me up and down icy hills and never complaining, although really started showing her age. 250,000 miles on the odometer. Whew!

In the end the broken CV joint, fuel pump, brakes, failing clutch were just too much. I couldn't afford to keep her, especially since here in Juneau I walk from home to work. So I have to let you go ole girl. Hopefully someone will fix you up and give you some of the pleasure you've given me and my family.
